I Found a Memory!

As with most children, I liked spending the weekend at my grandmother's house. It seemed a big old house but now, looking back on it, it really wasn't that big. I was recently thinking of my grandmother, who passed away just before her 88th birthday, when I came across a picture on the internet. That was the picture that had been on my grandmother's wall! It was called The Doctor.

I have found that once you find one memory, others follow. I had seen that picture many times but only really saw the doctor and the little child. I never noticed the parents in the background. With this, many memories of visits to my grandmother's house came to me. It was a good time in my life.

Now I have grandchildren of my own. They don't spend as much time at my house anymore because they are teenagers. They always need to be occupied by games, headsets, ipods, ipads, PS2, XBOX, and whatever new gadget is the current rage! I have given up trying to figure it all out. I realize I have become my grandmother! So, finding this picture of a memory in my childhood is a precious gift to me on this lovely spring day.

This has now ignited a spark of curiosity. I went to the attic and sifted through all the boxes that had been stored there. I found a very old copy of a book written by Seargent George Baker. It begins "I was born May 22, 1915 in Lowell, Mass." It is worn and the back cover is missing. It is called The Sad Sack and depicts cartoons of military life of a soldier referred to as "The Sad Sack." It is a series of cartoons written by the Seargent. The copyright is 1944! The back cover is missing but it seems the pages are intact!

It is a mystery where this book came from. It could have been my father-in-law's or it may have belonged to my husband. I think maybe the later as my husband was something of a pack rat. I have certainly had a great day of discoveries and look forward to investigating more corners of my attic!

I, too, enjoy sifting through my memories. Happy times!
